The Story Behind World Journey

I created World Journey in 2017 as an entry for the Van Lanschot Art Prize, where one of the key criteria was to reflect the Zeitgeist — the spirit of the times.

My idea was to capture the world in a single painting, using a simple, recognizable visual language. By bringing together iconic landmarks from different continents, I wanted to represent the world as a whole.

At the time, selfies were becoming an increasingly popular way of capturing and sharing our experiences, so naturally, they found their way into the painting too. Alongside these modern habits, I also wanted to touch on bigger issues, such as climate change and the importance of staying connected in an ever-changing world.

Beyond the places we visit and the moments we capture, World Journey carries a simple message: no matter where we come from or where life takes us, we all share the same world. Love, freedom and connection are what bring us together.

The painting is accompanied by a poem that brings its story and message to life through words.

天下 (tiānxià): all under heaven; everything under the sky; a traditional Chinese concept representing the entire world or all lands under the authority of the Chinese emperor

World Journey

Translated to English from original Dutch poem

Whether your journey began
In the wondrous world of the desert,
Where Egyptian pyramids shine in the sun,
Or you wander aimlessly through the French countryside,
In search of l’amour around the Eiffel Tower,

On your way through a grand adventure,
Walking along the Great Wall of China,
Only to be enchanted by culture,
Listening to the songs of the Sydney Opera House,

Breathtaking is the Statue of Liberty,
Whose message proclaims: “Do not be divided.”

Some venture even further into our paradise,
Finding themselves on thin ice in Antarctica,
Still untouched and unexplored,
Yet the melting has already begun.

It does not matter where you go or where you are,
Nowadays, you capture every moment on camera,
And we share it instantly, more than ever.
Without a photo – or better yet, a selfie – it’s as if you were never there.

No matter which continent your longing takes you to,
Whether we live beneath the clouds or beneath the moon,
We must continue to think of one another,
Give each other love, freedom and happiness.

Only then will we continue to exist.

De Wereldreis
